Single-core house wire is sold in coils. A small job (a room, a quick repair) runs on the standard retail coil. A project is a different matter: it measures its wiring in hundreds of metres of each size and colour, and that is the work project coils, 200 and 300 metres, are made for. For volume work the useful question is not which coil is bigger, but how much wire the job actually needs, and what it takes to get all of it to site.

Project coils: 200 and 300 metres

A project coil carries house wire in a long, single length, 200 or 300 metres on one coil. It is made for volume work, bought to a Bill of Quantities at project rates, and it brings advantages a string of short coils cannot.

What project coils bring to a job

Estimate the total wire first

The coil choice almost makes itself once you know the numbers. Work out the total wire the job needs, by size, by grade, by colour, before you buy anything. For project-scale work, that total runs to several hundred metres of each size and colour, which a project coil covers in one.

Getting that estimate right up front matters, because of a pattern we see often on site. A job is started on short coils; partway through it turns out to need more wire than the first rough count suggested, so another coil is fetched, and then another. Each of those trips carries its own transport, carting and material-handling, and totalled across several batches that cost frequently runs well past a single project coil. A correct estimate up front turns several part-loads into one planned delivery.

Our Wires BoQ tool is built for exactly this, list every size, grade and colour the job needs, get the totals, and send the BoQ for project-rate pricing. It is the simplest way to turn a guess into a number, and the number into the right coils.

When project coils are the right call

Project coils earn their place on contractor and builder jobs, a full house or larger, anywhere there are long continuous runs, a high total metre-age of each size and colour, and a BoQ to buy against. That is where the continuous lengths, the fewer off-cuts and the single planned delivery all pay back. Smaller work, a single room, a quick repair, is served well enough by the standard retail coil.
