Surge Protection Devices clamp transient overvoltage (lightning-induced surges that ride the incoming line, or switching transients from large loads elsewhere on the network) before they reach downstream electronics. Surge protection is not optional on installations with significant downstream electronics. A lightning strike anywhere on the grid within several kilometres can induce a surge that rides the incoming line and destroys IT gear, instrumentation, EMS gateways and HVAC controls, all in a single event. The SPD takes the surge first, sacrificially if necessary, and isolates the downstream loads.
