A Residual Current Device watches the difference between current leaving on the phase and current returning on the neutral. When the two don't match (because some current has found a path to earth, possibly through a human) the RCD trips, fast. Hager builds two devices in this family for the Indian installation: the RCCB (Residual Current Circuit Breaker, leakage protection only, paired with an upstream MCB for overload) and the RCBO (RCCB plus MCB in a single module, leakage and overload protection together).
Shreetuvis is an Authorised Channel Partner for the full Hager RCCB and RCBO range in Nagpur, 25 A to 125 A current ratings, 2-pole and 4-pole configurations, sensitivity tiers of 30 mA for personal protection, 100 mA and 300 mA for equipment and earth-leakage protection, in both AC and A types.
Specify an RCD by four coordinates: device type (RCCB or RCBO), sensitivity (30 / 100 / 300 mA), leakage type (AC or A), and current rating (25 A through 125 A in 2P or 4P).
Leakage protection only. The RCCB sits on the incoming side of a DB or a sub-feeder, trips on earth-leakage, and relies on a separate upstream MCB for overload protection. The simpler, less-expensive option when overload is handled elsewhere.
Both protections in a single module. The RCBO trips on leakage and overload, the protective device for a single circuit where you want both earth-leakage discrimination and overcurrent protection in one slot.
The sensitivity tier that protects a human in contact with a fault. Mandatory for residential socket circuits, bathroom circuits, kitchen lines, outdoor outlets. The 30 mA RCD trips fast enough to prevent ventricular fibrillation on a brief shock event.
Higher sensitivity tiers for equipment-level protection, selective with downstream 30 mA RCDs (the downstream device trips first, isolating the faulty circuit; the upstream survives, keeping unaffected loads running). Used at sub-main and main RCDs in larger installations.
The default. Type AC RCDs detect pure sinusoidal AC leakage current, the form of leakage from conventional motors, lighting, heating, sockets feeding plain AC loads. The right choice for most residential and commercial circuits.
Loads with switched-mode power supplies (IT racks, LED drivers, EV chargers, washing machines, induction cooktops) can leak pulsating DC current that a Type AC device misses. Type A detects both AC and pulsating-DC leakage. The current default for any installation with modern electronics.
The choice is mostly a question of DB layout. If the DB main is an MCB or MCCB and each circuit has its own dedicated MCB, then a single RCCB on the incoming gives all downstream circuits leakage protection, cheaper, simpler, fewer modules. The cost: when a single circuit leaks, the whole DB trips.
If the brief is circuit-level discrimination (the kitchen tripping shouldn't take down the bedroom lights) then each circuit gets its own RCBO (RCCB + MCB in one module). More modules, more cost; but a leakage event on one circuit isolates only that circuit. The right choice for hospital landing distributions, IT facility critical loads, premium residential.
If the load is a pure AC load (incandescent lighting, conventional motors, plain socket loads) Type AC is fine. If the load is anything with electronics, LED drivers, IT racks, EV chargers, modern washing machines, induction equipment, anything with a switched-mode supply, the leakage signature can include a pulsating-DC component that a Type AC device cannot detect reliably. Specify Type A for any modern installation where you don't know the full load profile or where the building will house electronics.
