When it comes to electrical installations, the choice of wiring is critical to ensure safety, efficiency and longevity. Different environments and applications require specific types of wires to meet various safety and performance standards. This note covers three important grades of electrical wire (FR (Flame Retardant), FRLSH (Flame Retardant Low Smoke and Halogen), and ZHFR (Zero Halogen Flame Retardant)) and what each means in service.
Flame Retardant (FR) wires
FR wires are designed to resist the spread of fire. The insulation is treated with a flame-retardant compound that slows combustion, providing time to control the fire and evacuate the premises. FR is the everyday house wire, appropriate for general-purpose electrical installations in residential and commercial buildings.
- Fire resistance, significantly slows the spread of fire
- Safety, provides additional time for evacuation and fire control
- Applications, general-purpose and house wiring
Flame Retardant Low Smoke and Halogen (FRLSH) wires
FRLSH wires are an advanced grade of FR. They not only resist the spread of fire, they also produce minimal smoke and halogen when burned, particularly important where smoke inhalation is a hazard. Used for house wiring and industrial installations.
- Fire resistance, prevents the spread of fire
- Low smoke emission, reduces smoke generation, preserves visibility during evacuation
- Low halogen emission, fewer toxic gases, reducing the risk of harm during a fire
- Applications, house wiring and industrial installations
Zero Halogen Flame Retardant (ZHFR) wires
ZHFR wires represent the highest safety standard in electrical wiring. Designed to prevent fire spread and emit no halogen gases when exposed to fire, meaning no corrosive or toxic gases are released. Mandatory for hospitals, malls, airports and high-rise buildings, anywhere the public gathers.
- Fire resistance, prevents the spread of fire
- Zero halogen emission, no toxic or corrosive gases released
- High safety standards: utmost safety in sensitive environments
- Applications, hospitals, malls, airports, high-rise buildings and other public-occupancy spaces

Twelve technical points to look at when picking a manufacturer
The grade names tell you what the wire is supposed to do. These twelve points tell you whether a particular manufacturer's wire actually does it.
1 · Conductor quality
- Material, 99.97 % or higher purity electrolytic-grade copper (or aluminium for some applications)
- Conductivity, close to 100 % IACS for copper
- Annealing, proper annealing ensures flexibility and reduces brittleness
2 · Insulation material
- Type, PVC, FR, FRLSH, HFFR (ZHFR) depending on the application
- Thermal resistance, withstand temperatures of 70 °C to 105 °C
- Dielectric strength, higher breakdown voltage means better insulation
- ISI mark, compliance with IS 694 for domestic wiring
3 · Current-carrying capacity
- Rated current-carrying capacities must meet or exceed the design load, based on conductor size and insulation type
4 · Wire gauge accuracy
- Conductor cross-sectional area must match the stated size (e.g. 1 sq mm, 1.5 sq mm)
- Avoid manufacturers that undersize wires, compromises performance and current-carrying capacity
5 · Voltage grade
- Standard wires are rated 300/500 V or 600/1100 V depending on application. Pick higher voltage grades for better safety margins
6 · Resistance to external conditions
- Moisture resistance, water-repellent insulation
- UV resistance, for outdoor installations
- Chemical resistance, important for industrial use
- Anti-rodent properties, coatings to prevent rodent damage
7 · Safety certifications
- ISI mark, Indian Standards compliance
- RoHS, insulation free from hazardous substances
- IEC / BS, international standards for high-quality imports
8 · Flexibility and durability
- Stranded wires offer better flexibility than solid wires
- Tinned copper conductors resist corrosion in humid environments
9 · Fire safety
- Flame propagation resistance
- Low smoke emission and toxic gas release during fire (FRLSH / HFFR)
- Oxygen Index (OI), higher OI means better fire resistance
10 · Quality control and testing
- Manufacturer's testing regime, tensile strength, heat shock, spark test
- Third-party quality audits or lab test reports
11 · Warranty and longevity
- Warranties of 10 to 25 years offered by the brand as a testament to durability
12 · Ease of installation
- Flexible wires with smooth insulation ensure easier stripping and pulling through conduits
- Pre-lubricated wires reduce friction in long runs
