Electrical conduits are essential components in any electrical installation, providing protection and organisation for electrical wiring. Finolex (for whose electrical conduit range we hold Authorised Distributor status) offers three mechanical-stress grades to meet diverse installation requirements. In this note we cover the three grades: LMS, MMS and HMS, their applications, and the practical implications of picking the right one.
Light Mechanical Stress (LMS)
LMS conduits are designed for installations that experience minimal mechanical stress. Lightweight, flexible and easy to install, ideal for residential and light-commercial applications where heavy mechanical protection is not required.
- Lightweight, easy to handle and install
- Flexible, routes cleanly through confined spaces
- Cost-effective, economical choice for low-stress environments
- Applications, residential buildings, light commercial projects, areas with minimal mechanical stress
Medium Mechanical Stress (MMS)
MMS conduits are a step up from LMS, providing moderate protection against mechanical impact. The day-to-day workhorse, robust and versatile, suitable for the majority of commercial and most residential applications. The default specification on most BoQs in our area.
- Durable, good resistance to mechanical impact
- Versatile, suitable for a wide range of installations
- Balanced, between flexibility and strength
- Applications, commercial buildings, industrial setups, areas with moderate mechanical stress
Heavy Mechanical Stress (HMS)
HMS conduits are designed for environments with high mechanical impact and stress. Extremely durable, providing superior protection in harsh conditions, the right choice for industrial and outdoor applications where the conduit may bear physical loading or exposure.
- High strength, maximum resistance to mechanical impact
- Durable, withstands harsh environmental conditions
- Safety, superior protection for the wiring inside
- Applications, industrial facilities, outdoor installations, areas with high mechanical stress
Comparison at a glance
| Grade | Mechanical stress | Applications | Key advantages |
|---|---|---|---|
| LMS | Light | Residential buildings, light commercial | Lightweight, flexible, cost-effective |
| MMS | Medium | Commercial buildings, industrial setups | Durable, versatile, balanced protection |
| HMS | Heavy | Industrial facilities, outdoor installations | High strength, durable, superior protection |
Why grade choice matters
Picking the right conduit grade for the loading is a small decision that gets revisited on every renovation or service call, and you don't want to discover the wrong choice from inside a wall.
An LMS conduit specified for an industrial floor will crack on the first dropped tool. An HMS conduit run through a residential ceiling adds material cost the project never needed. Three grades, three honest specifications, and the right one for your project is usually the one your application loading naturally points to.
