h3+ is Hager's current-generation MCCB platform, designed around a smaller frame footprint than the previous-generation MCCBs at equivalent ratings, with both traditional thermal-magnetic and electronic trip technologies available across the frame ladder. The compact footprint matters at the panel-design stage: an h3+ saves panel real estate that a building-services consultant can spend on cable terminations or sub-section spacing.
Three frames cover most of the Indian LV-panel installed base (P160 for 25 A to 160 A, P250 for 100 A to 250 A, P400 for 250 A to 400 A) with higher frames extending to 630 A and beyond. Pole configurations are 3-pole and 4-pole; breaking capacity comes in five tiers from 25 kA up to 110 kA, picked against the available fault current at the device's installed position.
The h3+ family is selected on six coordinates: frame size, current rating within the frame, breaking-capacity tier, trip technology, pole configuration, and any optional accessories (shunt trip, undervoltage release, energy measurement). The tiles below walk through each.
The compact frame. Footprint optimised for tight-cabin installations and the MCCB-Enclosure variants of Novello+ DBs. Residential-township DB-room mains, small commercial fit-out incoming, retail-outlet main.
Mid-frame MCCB for substantial commercial mains. Hospital main panel, hotel-floor main, mid-size factory sub-main, retail-mall feeder. Overlaps with P160 in the 100 – 160 A range when higher breaking capacity is required.
Large-frame MCCB for plant-level mains and main switchboards. 33/11 kV substation LT-side outgoing, industrial main panel incoming, large-mall HVAC sub-main. Higher frames within the family extend to 500 A and 630 A.
Fixed-setting magnetic and thermal release. The traditional MCCB technology, robust, well-understood, no auxiliary power required. Specify TM when the panel's protection settings are known at design stage and don't need to adjust over the building's life.
Microprocessor-based trip. Long-time (overload), Short-time (delayed short-circuit), Instantaneous, and optionally Ground-fault, all with adjustable settings on the unit. Choose when selectivity must be tunable, future-load headroom must be reserved, or earth-fault discrimination is critical.
Five tiers across the h3+ family. 25 kA for far-from-source positions, 36 / 50 kA for typical commercial mains, 70 / 110 kA close to the transformer LT side or where calculated fault currents are high. Always specify against the available fault current, not against a "safer is bigger" intuition.
An h3+ MCCB is specified in four sequential decisions. One: pick the frame size against the maximum continuous current, the highest rating you ever expect the device to carry plus a small headroom for future growth. Two: pick the trip technology, thermal-magnetic if the panel's protection settings are fixed by design, electronic LSI / LSIG if the settings will move or if earth-fault selectivity matters. Three: pick the breaking capacity tier against the calculated available fault current at the installed position, a calculated number, not a guessed one. Four: pick the pole configuration, 3P for 3-phase loads with neutral-earthed system, 4P where the neutral must switch with the phases (typical for DG-changeover-fed circuits).
The accessories (shunt trip coil, undervoltage release, auxiliary contacts, motorised mechanism, communication module) are decided last, against the panel-control philosophy. Most general MCCB specifications don't need them; safety-critical and automation-integrated panels often do.
The point of fitting an MCCB at the main is to keep the building running when a single downstream circuit faults. Selectivity is the property that the downstream MCB trips before the upstream h3+, clearing the fault while the rest of the building stays live. Hager publishes detailed selectivity tables for h3+ against the company's MCB families: the curves and the I²t energy let-through values. These references are available through the authorised channel: any panel design where selectivity actually matters should be coordinated against the published tables before the order is placed.
Some electronic-trip h3+ variants include an integrated energy-measurement module (voltage, current, power, energy consumption, harmonic profile) and a communication interface (Modbus or similar) for facility-management integration. For an IT facility, a hospital, or a large commercial building where energy data feeds the BMS, the electronic h3+ replaces a separate MCCB plus power-meter combination.
